We are living in a reality where there is a huge focus on organic produce, and not so much on the origin or the season of the produce! What we don’t realize is that a lot of times, the organic produce is not local…….it is very convenient and appealing to be able to get organic fruits and veggies all year long, but is organic really the healthier option?
As we all know, fruits and veggies are being harvested when the level of nutrients is at their highest in the development. Once they have been harvested the nutritional value begins to decrease – for some products more rapidly than for others. Knowing only that, for me personally it makes much more sense to buy local products, rather than organic which often times are being imported all the way from the other side of the world. There are three main reasons for this:
– the imported products need longer transportation time, which means that the produce are losing more nutritional value then the local ones
– because the imported produce are being transported longer, the probability of this goods being harvested well before they are supposed to (to avoid spoiled goods before sale) is very high. Which means that most probably the imported goods have less nutritional value then the local
– the negative effect the transportation of these products has on the environment as a whole
Another important aspect to focus on when doing your grocery, is to focus on the fruits and veggies that are in season. The simple reason for that is besides the fact that season produce is much richer in flavour and the nutritional value is higher, this way, we are nourishing our body according to nature’s cycle.
